Another small point: a lot of people seem to like the convenience of booking an all-inclusive versus rolling their own. It's actually easy as the places we went to are booking through travel agencies, not the places themselves (which is great because our Spanish isn't very good).

http://www.differentworld.com and
http://www.mexicoholiday.com

They both specialize in non-inclusive accomodations in Mexico. Our flight was done through expedia.ca and our car through alamo.com.

You mention cruises and all-inclusive but are leaving out an excellent third option: non-all-inclusive. We went on an all-inclusive for the first time in 2002 (Varadero, Cuba), then last year thought about going on a cruise for our honeymoon. We decided instead to do neither. We rented a car at Cancun airport, then stayed 4 nights at Cabanas La Conchita in Tulum, then 4 nights at Kailuum II near Playa del Carmen. We found these two places by looking at the highest rated non-inclusive places on tripadvisor.com located around Tulum and Playa repectively. We booked our air far separately. We paid far less than we would have on an all-inclusive or a cruise. And what we got for our money was far better. We ate somewhere different for lunch and dinner every day in Tulum and we explored in our rental car finding secluded beaches, cenotes, and things to do. The two places we stayed at were amazing, right on the beach, and the Mexican hosts are really friendly. We never thought it would be so amazing and now I don't think we'll go back to all-inclusive again. It was worth the extra 1-2 hours of planning that it took.

yep, that pretty much sums up our experiences as well. I'd only do it again if it was a very good deal...we'll stick with the all-inclusives in the future.

Very interesting review! My wife and I are going on a cruise in April on Carnival. We recently were in Jamacia at 2 different all-inclusive resorts and loved it! I have feeling the cruise will be good, but not as nice as the all-inclusive, although people tell me that one reason cruises are better is bc of the different locations you visit instead of just one resort! But I think that you are correct in your last paragraph about the two! Either way, looking forward to the little vacation!
